Audi Is Stepping Into the Plug-In Arena

Audi has announced that there will be a plug-in hybrid variant for its Q8 SUV. Two powertrains will be available - one with 376 total horsepower and the other with 456 horsepower. The 100 kW (134 hp) synchronous electric motor is embedded in the housing of an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission and when we say this SUV is spirited, we mean it. The 17.8 kWh pouch cell battery is capable of supplying electric power alone for up to 28 miles at speeds up to 83 mph, which is ideal for daily driving. As with any Audi, the plug-in hybrid Audi Q8 comes with a wide variety of creature comforts to support its image as a luxury vehicle for drivers who appreciate high-end vehicles.

Audi's base model is the Q8 55 TFSI e quattro while the upscale version is the Q8 Competition 60 TFSI e quattro. The plug-in hybrid Audi Q8 has a mechanical center differential that usually sends 40% of the power to the front wheels and 60% to the rear wheels. If duty calls, the differential can transmit up to 85% to the front wheels or 70% to the rear wheels as conditions require.

The plug-in Audi Q8 has a 7.4 kW charger and can be recharged in about 2.5 hours using a public charging station. The battery can also be recharged by the engine while driving. As an added bonus, the plug-in Audi Q8 also has a towing capacity of 3.5 tons, one of the highest tow ratings for any plug-in hybrid vehicle. Towing can be accomplished in full-electric mode until the capacity of the battery is exhausted.
